People often ask me how I get so much done – running a business, with 3 youngs boys and a small-holding to manage. I’ve got a secret to share about how I do it. And it’s time for a confession, too…
How do I get so much done? How do I find time to publish books, create online courses, run workshops and look after myself and my family?
I don’t. At least, not properly.
I manage the business stuff, the family stuff, the running the house stuff… But here’s the confession:
I haven’t managed the ‘looking after me’ stuff.
And that’s a heavy price to pay.
While I’m out there helping everyone else to change their lives, I’m running on empty. My adrenals keep me going with a cocktail of adrenalin and cortisol. My yoga and meditation practices (particularly mindfulness, mantra and pranayama) top my energy levels up just enough to get me through the day. Historically, I have also made the most of coffee and tea to give me a boost when I was flagging. But by the end of the day, I’m often on my knees (usually just metaphorically!) as I drag myself to bed for another night of looking after the bubba.
There’s a huge problem with all this.
It’s called Adrenal Fatigue.
And it’s an epidemic.
James Wilson’s wonderful book “Adrenal Fatigue” helped me spot the pattern I was running, about a year ago. But, despite making sure I was following (most of!) his advice, I have continued to keep over-drawing my “life force account”. And the bank of prana is about to call in its overdraft. So it’s time for some massive (non)-action.
The problem with adrenal fatigue is that it won’t get better unless you change the way you’re living.
You end up feeling more and more exhausted, and yet somehow you seem to find a way to keep going, which makes you even more exhausted. As soon as you get a spoonful of energy, you use it up with gusto. And there comes a point where your body, mind and spirit say “no more!”.
That’s when we have breakdowns – physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.
I’m getting very close to the point where my body is going to press the ‘stop’ button. In fact, it has tried a few times over the past year, but I’ve somehow managed to keep on going.
The last time I woke up feeling like I had actually been to sleep was when I was Interrailing in the Austrian mountains when I was 18. I’m not telling you how many decades ago that was. Yes, feeling “tired all the time” has been a major driver for making me want to learn about holistic living and healing methodologies, which have allowed me to help many thousands of people over the years, but I hadn’t been going far enough.
So it’s time for me to stop this merry-go-round. Basta! Enough!
I might end up saying ‘no’ to things.
I might end up letting people down.
I might have to put an ‘out of office’ message on my email telling people it could take a week or more to get a reply, instead of just a few hours.
I might have to slow down a bit, re-evaluate priorities, dump some of the stuff I do, not finish some projects, let go of old commitments, perhaps even – the most scary thing of all (for me!) – ask for support and accept it! 🙂
But I’m at the stage where this kind of change is essential – beyond essential – if I still want to be around in a year’s time.
My decades of being driven, passionate, inspired, creative and achieving my dreams have pretty much cost me my physical health, from pushing myself too far, too fast, too hard and too often.
So I’m going to be slowing down for a while (do you have any idea how terrifying it is for me to even write that phrase?!).
I’m going to be taking a journey from adrenal exhaustion to feeling vibrant for life.
And – because I know there are millions of people are out there, feeling about as beyond-exhaustion as I have been feeling, who are putting their health and even their life at risk – I’m going to be sharing the journey with you.
I’m going to be blogging, podcasting and creating videos over the coming months, to share with you what works, what doesn’t, which tweaks make the vital difference and the insights I gain, as I gently and permanently recover my health, restoring my energy levels to where they deserve to be.
